SWEET RELIEF assists musicians facing financial challenges due to illness, disability or age-related problems. The Fund was founded by singer / songwriter Victoria Williams and other members of the music community when, in 1993, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Top recording stars including Lou Reed, Pearl Jam, Lucinda Williams and Matthew Sweet banded together to record an album, the proceeds of which partly went to form the Fund. Since then, Sweet Relief has grown to be one of the leading entertainment industry charities, helping musicians of all types through their hard times. Grant recipients include recording artists, club and session musicians, composers and songwriters from across the country. Sweet Relief also provides assistance to older musicians, regardless of medical condition, for basic living expenses.
