Our Mission

Founded in 1996, THE MR. HOLLAND’S OPUS FOUNDATION keeps music alive in our schools and communities by donating musical instruments to under-funded music programs, which gives youngsters the many benefits of music education, helping them to be better students and inspiring creativity and expression through playing music.

Our Work

MHOF donates both new and refurbished instruments to school and after-school music programs that lack the resources to keep up with equipment loss due to attrition, depreciation and wear over time, and to accommodate students on waiting lists or who have to share instruments. An infusion of instruments enables more students to participate and to experience a quality music education. We do this through three programs:

• The Melody Program helps K-12 school music programs.

• The Special Projects Program helps after school music programs.

• The Michael Kamen Solo Award helps outstanding student musicians who cannot afford to obtain an appropriate instrument.

Our Impact

Every year, an average of 10,000 young people across the country benefit from MHOF Programs. Students who can't afford to rent an instrument and kids on waiting lists are given an opportunity to play quality instruments which improves their experience and inspires them to accomplish more and more. A grant from MHOF elevates the music program and elicits more support and demand for music education for all students. Schools have fewer discipline problems, higher attendance and have more kids graduate when they are involved in the music program. Kids learn a skill and positive behaviors that will last well into their lives. Nationally, 870 instrument grants have been given.

Our Achievements

• Recognition by the National Association of Music Education with their FAME and Partnership of Professionals Award for outstanding work in promoting music education across the country.

• Recognition by the First Lady of the United States as part of a White House Panel on Arts Education.

• In January 2006, Executive Director, Felice Mancini was presented with the Music for Life Award from NAMM, the International Music Products Association, and in 2007, commended for outstanding community service for the benefit of citizens of Los Angeles County.

• Cited by the State of Louisiana Department of Education for efforts in restoring music programs in areas devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

Our Efficiency

MHOF's programs are narrowly focused and efficiently administered. Of every $1 we spend, 90¢ goes to putting instruments into student's hands. Charity Navigator awarded their highest 4 star rating to MHOF.
